Developmental baby toys invite little ones to press, push, stack and discover. In this collection you will find activity cubes with shape sorters and music, pop-up toys with animals, dinosaurs and vehicles, spinning carousels and ball towers, stacking pyramids, bead mazes and wooden Woopie Green activity trees, tables and drawer sorters, many of them made from FSC-certified wood.
Learning through cause and effect
Between six months and two years a child discovers that pressing a button makes an animal pop up and that a ball dropped into a tower comes out at the bottom. These simple experiences build the foundations of thinking: memory, prediction and problem solving. Repetition is the point – the hundredth time is just as exciting as the first.
What to look for at each stage
- 6–12 months. Soft sensory blocks, activity cubes, a fox piano with lights and spinning carousels – toys that react to a touch.
- 12–18 months. Pop-up toys, a pound-a-ball with hammer, spiral ball tracks and a musical shape sorter car.
- 18–24 months. Stacking pyramids, bead mazes, the Tooky Toy Montessori box 7-in-1 and wooden activity tables with several tasks.
Wooden or plastic?
Both have their place. Plastic toys from Woopie Baby are light and often have sounds and lights, while wooden toys from Woopie Green, Viga and Tooky Toy are quieter, more durable and pleasant to touch. A mix of both keeps play varied.
See also sensory toys, shape sorters and toys for 1–2 year olds. All toys for the youngest are in baby toys.
Frequently asked questions
What is a developmental toy?
A toy that supports a specific skill – grasping, coordination, recognising shapes or understanding cause and effect – through play.
How many toys does a toddler need?
Fewer than you might think. Five or six toys rotated every week work better than many toys at once.
Which toy is best for a one-year-old?
Pop-up toys, ball towers and activity cubes are favourites at this age because they reward every action with a result.
