Toys for 3–5 Year Olds

From three, pretend play becomes rich and detailed: children take on roles, plan a story and talk it through. Their hands are ready for small parts, scissors, glue and brushes. Interest in numbers, letters and rules appears, and many children enjoy simple board games and puzzles with more pieces. Social skills grow too: sharing, taking turns and solving conflicts in play. Toys that support these steps help a child prepare for school without feeling like lessons.

• Logic and learning. A 60-in-1 logic games set, a magnetic farm puzzle, a wooden abacus, a letter fishing game, an emotions board and a colour sorting game. See puzzles and games and educational toys.

Start with what your child already loves: vehicles, animals, building, drawing or caring for dolls. Then choose a toy that adds a small challenge, such as more pieces, a rule or a new role. Toys with open play, like building sets and role play kits, last longer than toys with one function. If you have a three-year-old, check the age label for small parts; older children can handle more detailed sets.
