Toy Cars and Vehicles

A car rolling down a ramp is a first lesson in cause and effect and in gravity. Loading and unloading cars trains fine motor skills and counting. Building roads and car parks develops spatial thinking. Ride-on vehicles add big movements: pushing with the feet, steering and balance. And every vehicle game is also a story in which a child is a driver, a farmer or a rescuer.

• From 1 year. A ride-on tractor with a detachable trailer for the youngest farmers: push along with the feet, honk the horn and carry toys. See tractors and farm vehicles and ride-on toys.
• From 18 months. A wooden stacking train with wagons, blocks and animal passengers, and a cascade ramp where cars zig-zag down to the finish. More in trains and train tracks and car tracks and garages.
• From 2 years. A wooden car transporter with small cars for load-and-unload play. See toy cars.
• From 3 years. A dinosaur truck with 12 mini vehicles that stores the cars, opens into a race track and is carried like a suitcase.

Wooden trains, transporters and ramps are sturdy, pleasant to hold and work without batteries, so the child is the engine. They suit toddlers well. Plastic vehicles are lighter and can have more moving parts and details, such as the dinosaur truck with a built-in track or the ride-on tractor with a horn. Many families combine both. You will find more wooden vehicles in wooden toys.

Use tape on the floor to make roads and a car park. Build a garage or a bridge from blocks and building sets. Sort cars by colour or size, count how many fit on the transporter, or race them down a ramp and guess which one will be fastest. Simple tasks like these turn play into learning without your child noticing.
