The Masterkidz magnetism board – see for yourself how magnets attract, repel and point the way.

This magnet science board lets children discover first-hand how magnets work. The wooden board has a large horseshoe magnet with marked poles and a ring magnet. Put opposite poles together and the magnets attract; matching poles repel – a first lesson in magnetism. A clear box holds iron filings – drawing them with a magnet reveals the magnetic field lines. The board also has a compass and a picture of Earth's magnetic lines, so children can learn to find directions. Size 28 × 28 × 3 cm. From 3 years.

What your child develops

• Scientific thinking. How do magnets work?
• Observation. Field lines in the filings.
• Orientation. Directions with a compass.
• Cause and effect. Attract and repel.

How to play

Test together: which things around the house stick to a magnet and which don't?

Take the compass to the window and find out which direction it faces.
