The Woopie Green Montessori drawer box is a wooden sorter for toddlers from 12 months: drop a piece into the right slot and find it in the pull-out drawer. Four difficulty levels, 26 pieces.

This Montessori sorter box with drawer is one of the first steps in learning through play. The idea is simple: drop a piece into the matching slot and watch it slide into the drawer. Four inserts with different openings let your child move gradually from easy to harder – with a ball, coins, carrots and coloured sticks. The pull-out drawer also stores all the pieces. The toy is made of quality wood painted with safe, non-toxic paints, and the manufacturer states the wood is FSC labelled. It suits girls and boys alike.

What your child develops

• Fine motor skills. Fitting a coin or stick into a narrow slot takes precise finger movements.
• Sorting. Your toddler learns that each piece has its own slot.
• Colour recognition. The coloured sticks help name and learn colours.
• Object permanence. A piece disappears into a slot and reappears in the drawer – your child discovers this alone.
• Patience. Four levels let your child progress at their own pace.

How to play

Start with the easiest insert and the ball: show how to drop it in, then pull out the drawer together to find it. Once your toddler has mastered that, swap to the next level with coins or carrots.

Older toddlers can sort sticks by colour or count the coins they post. After play, everything collects in the drawer and the box is tidy.

Why a wooden sorter

Wooden pieces have a natural weight and texture, and they make a satisfying sound as they drop into the drawer. A wooden toy lasts a long time and can be passed on to younger siblings.
